Lagundri Bay Surf Guide

Indonesia’s original perfect right-hander has only gotten better with time. First showcased in the surf mags in the late ’70s, this world-class wave goes by many names – Nias, Lagundri Bay, Sorake Beach, or simply The Point. However you call it, it’s the stuff regularfoot dreams are made of. Situated on the southern tip of Nias Island, about 100 miles off the coast of Sumatra, Lagundri Bay is directly exposed to Southern Indian Ocean energy. However, because the perfect tabletop reef is tucked deep inside the northwest corner of the bay, swells must bend significantly before wrapping in to make the magic happen. That means Lagundri needs a solid swell – typically over six feet from the S or SW – before it lights up.

Once it does, get ready. This mechanical right-hander delivers a jacking takeoff straight into a freight train barrel over shallow reef. The ride may be short, but it’s sweeter than a Pocari Sweat and Beng Beng smoothie. The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and 2005 earthquake uplifted the reef in just the right way, turning an already excellent wave into an even hollower, wider barrel. While it still barrels at mid to high tide, dead low is strictly for expert tube hunters.
