Mawi Surf Guide
Mawi is Lombok’s most consistent dry-season wave and one of the few south coast spots that stays clean during the SE trades. The reef is a reliable swell magnet, serving up something fun even when other breaks are flat or blown out. Don’t be surprised to find a carload of crusty, road-tripping tube hunters camped out here between Desert Point swells.
The wave itself is a consistent – if somewhat shifty – peak. On small to medium swells, it serves up a short, bowly right and a longer left that races down the reef. The left works on all tides but gets faster and hollower at low. The right needs more water to line up, but when it does, it offers a quick, punchy wall with an end section tailor-made for airs, as the trades blow straight into it. When the swell gets big, the right gets buried and the left takes over, transforming into a high-speed freight train with hollow sections at low tide.
The setting is pure fantasy: white sand, crystal water, and green camel hump mountain spires that look straight out of Super Mario Land (minus the mushrooms… unless you’re into that sort of thing, in which case they’re readily available in this area). Epic sunset spot.

Local Vibe
Welcoming
Low. There are a handful of humble warungs right on the beach offering much needed shade, cold coconuts and the standard nasi and mie goreng fare to fuel up on. Give the local families some business and they’ll watch your gear.
Crowd Factor
Moderate
Generally mellow. Can get busy on small days in dry season when it’s the only good option. Other times, it’s empty and feels like a forgotten corner of Indo.
Spot Rating
Fun
Fun to good; consistent option in dry season.
Shoulder Burn
Medium
Light to heavy; depends on swell size and current.
Water Quality
Clean
Clean.
Hazards
Sharp reef, rocks, lots of fishing boat traffic around these bays, which can attract wildlife.

Access
From the main highway, turn down a rough dirt road that meanders through farmland and imagine you are in Bali 50 years ago. Pay the guy at the rickety gate a few rupiah. Note: The road can get very muddy and sketchy after a solid rain.
Bottom
The reef is sharp. At higher tides, you can paddle in and out over the reef to the sand. At dead low, it’s a tap dance over pointy reef. At lower tides, the right can leave you drydocked inside, while the left holds a bit more water and offers an easier paddle back out. To avoid walking the reef at low tide, use the deeper channel in the cove around the corner past the left’s end section.
Best Season
May-October.
