Monte Clérigo Surf Guide
Surf spot guide
Ideal Surf Conditions
Swell Direction
NW hits it best, but W swells will work too.
Wind
East is best but will tolerate southerly winds if not too strong. Pretty sensitive to the prevalent northerlies, though.
Surf Height
Waist high to overhead.
Tide
Works on all tides but rising-to-mid is usually best.
Monte Clérigo Surf Guide
Monte Clérigo is a spacious, north facing beachbreak with multiple peaks and shifting banks. It’s exposed, scenic, and a favorite for both locals and visiting intermediates. Spread out up or down the beach for more room and often better shape.
Ability Level
Intermediate
Intermediate. Monte Clérigo gets lots of swell, so expect sudden increases in power and size. But it doesn’t hold much size, so it is rarely surfed when it’s big.
Local Vibe
Welcoming
Mellow, family-friendly. Crowds are generally easy-going, but be mindful near the main access peak — it gets competitive on clean days.
Crowd Factor
Mellow
Monte Clérigo benefits from being close to Praia do Amado, the most consistent break in the region, which concentrates most local surf schools and crowds.
Spot Rating
Fun
Powerful beachbreak with good swell exposure and sandbars capable of delivering good mid-range waves
Shoulder Burn
Medium
There’s always some lines of foam to deal with.
Water Quality
Clean
Pristine, like most beaches in the area. Recipient of the Quercus Golden Quality Beach award by Portugal’s main environmental agency.
Hazards
There are some rip currents, but when it’s surfable that will barely be an issue.
Bring Your
Shortboard, Fish, Longboard, Bodyboard, Bodysurfing
Access
Beachside parking, easy walk. It’s only beach along the Algarve west-facing coastline faced by a beachfront fishing village.
Bottom
Sand.
Best Season
October to March for the small-medium offshore days, but swell exposure makes it one of the region’s most reliable spots during summer months.
