Passe de L'Ambulante Surf Guide

The Le Morne area of southwest Mauritius has several quality waves, a large turquoise lagoon behind the barrier reef, and the imposing Le Morne Brabant itself towering over the area. The sheer-sided mountain is the core of a long-extinct volcano.

On the outer reef at the north end of the lagoon is an obvious gap, the Passe L'Ambulante, with a decent left on one side and a better right on the other. The waves are quite a long way from the shoreline, so unless a half-hour paddle is part of your training program, ask the locals in the area for a boat arrangement for drop off and pickup.

The right is a fast and occasionally barreling wave, with many of the characteristics of reef pass waves worldwide in that it breaks over a live coral reef, it can be very shallow at low tide, and the wave ends abruptly in the deeper water of the pass.
