Puerto Plata Surf Guide

The westernmost spot in the Amber Coast’s main surf zone, Puerto Plata is the island’s marquee big wave. Located smack dab in a developed town with a bustling tourist scene, a large shipping channel cuts through the reef to reveal two different spots: La Puntilla, which does a marvelous job of making sense of mixed-up Atlantic swells and turning them into peaky rights and lefts; and Puerto Plata, affectionately dubbed POP by locals. On a giant N-NE swell, this formidable righthander is capable of holding triple-overhead, even XXL surf. The most daring feats in DR surfing history have happened right here.

Spot Rating

Fun

PoorPerfect

At its fiercest Puerto Plata is a heavy, hollow right that can hold 20 feet, shifts without warning, and can never decide if it wants to clamp shut or blow cannonballs. Some people call it the Dominican Pipeline.

Shoulder Burn

Medium

LightExhausting

It’s a fairly long paddle to the peak. And even with that channel right there, the rips and cleanup sets can do a number on your upper body.

Water Quality

With such a large harbor nearby, it can get a lil gross after heavy rainfall. A big enough swell will mop it up nice, though.

Hazards

Sharp reef, urchins, rips, big waves.

Access

Puerto Plata Airport (POP) is less than 20 miles away. Go to the harbor, look for the big shipping channel, head toward the colonial fort, look at all that whitewater out the back and you’ll know you’re there.
