Skeleton Bay Surf Guide
Surf spot guide
Ideal Surf Conditions
Swell Direction
W through SW, although the more W it is, the more swell gets in and the “easier” it is to surf.
Wind
Manageable winds range from SE to E, with SE being ideal.
Surf Height
The wave becomes makeable once it hits the head-high+ mark, and becomes increasingly more difficult to surf with every foot above double-overhead.
Tide
Breaks on all tides, but gets increasingly gnarly as the tide gets lower.
Skeleton Bay Surf Guide
When Skeleton Bay was revealed in 2008, it was immediately declared the best wave on the planet. While a handful of contenders have popped up over the past decade, Skeleton Bay is still the standard against which all barreling spits are measured. A flawless, backless, mile-long, left-hand barrel machine with an impossible drop and break-neck pace, the wave only breaks a handful of times per season, but when it does it’s attended by a dedicated cadre of the world’s best barrel riders. Minute-long tube rides are possible here, for those who have the ability, desire, and luck to snag the right wave. But even the worst wave during a legit swell is better than just about every other barrel on the planet.
Ability Level

Pros and experts only.
Local Vibe
Welcoming
Stoked.
Crowd Factor
Mellow
50 or so pros and traveling surfers on the rare instance the wave turns on, but the length of wave and treadmill current keeps things mellow.

Arguably the best left-hander in the world.
Shoulder Burn
Exhausting
Probably the strongest current you’ll ever paddle.
Water Quality
Fair
While the water is an unappealing brown, the general lack of nearby infrastructure means there probably isn’t E. Coli in the lineup.
Hazards
Shallow, neck-breaking slabs; 800,000 local seals (and, one would assume, a bunch of well-fed sharks).
Bring Your
Shortboard, Bodyboard
Access
Fly to Namibia, find a 4x4 truck, and pick your way through the desert to the spit.
Bottom
Shallow sand bar.
Best Season
Swells are possible between April and September, with the late season typically being better.
