Sunset Reef Surf Guide
The one real and legitimate tow surf spot on the peninsula, Sunset also gets paddled when it's perfect. But when the wind comes up it's really difficult to paddle, and it becomes the domain of the local tow teams. To tow out there you need to have a permit or get in touch with Tow Surf South Africa to get all the launch details and permissions. It's a big and perfect outside bommie, with a barreling right and a thick left off it. It used to be paddled a lot on the really perfect days on 9-foot rhino chasers. With the advent of tow surfing, sunset has come back into vogue in a big way. The wave barrels and as the tow teams have gotten better and better, so they have learned to backdoor the main peak and get massive, thick tubes.Getting caught inside or wiping out on the peak is going to result in fierce poundings in ice cold water, and the thick layer of bull-kelp on the inside doesn't make things better at all. There is an inside wave at Sunset called Washing Machine's. It doesn't often get good.
