Torrey Pines State Beach Surf Guide
Torrey Pines is a pretty standard California beachbreak, more of a fall-winter spot on smaller NW and W swells, particularly windswells. It can be somewhat an escape from the crowds of Scripps/La Jolla Shores, Blacks to the south or Del Mar City Beaches to the north. Scenery is great, hence the popular hiking trail and golf course up the hill. Like any beachbreak, quality of sandbars can change by the day and season; significant winter rains can help structure them better at times. Most surfers tend to walk north of the Los Penasquitos Lagoon North Lot entrance to search for a peak that's working. Higher incoming tide will help the shape. Due to the exposed location of the spot to the wind, it usually gets blown out by 10-11am like most beachbreaks around here. Sandbars don't hold much bigger than head-high and paddling out can be a problem as swell increases. On bigger days experienced surfers will go to nearby spots with more structure. For the most part crowds are mellow than other North County / SD spots, more beginner to intermediates and families around on nicer days. Biggest issue can be parking; getting the State Park Explorer Pass will help you out significantly so you can get a spot in North or South state lot. LOCAL RESOURCES: SD Surfrider Foundation
