Today

Solid day of waves, some SW wind crumble for the morning. Afternoon bump manageable.

SW swell tops out for chest-shoulder high waves at average spots. Better breaks from the HB Pier south see head-high to a bit overhead surf and standouts go a couple of feet overhead. Just enough NW swell mix for the odd corner, but pretty lined up at open beachbreaks overall.

Light S-SW wind early will pick up some through the morning but never looks like a deal breaker. Light bump through the afternoon and I'd keep an eye on the evening window with onshore winds mellowing out.

Newport Lower Jetties Surf Guide

36th is a great place for average surfers in the summer. On big, closeout south swells, you can find fun peaks/left walls in that area. However, the closer you get to the pier the smaller the waves will be. The waves are more forgiving and mellower than the upper jetties. 36th can be fun with the winter's west swells too. Plus there's less crowd and it's less competitive than 28th Street and Blackies. (Hint: It's worth a check on big closeout south swells when the south wind is blowing.) Read more
